Sew A Shift Dress (2 Days) £95.00

2 Day Beginners Dressmaking

Saturday 2nd and 9th September 2017

10am-4pm

THE CLASS

On this 2 day class Sarah will share her own techniques and 30 years of expertise, to help you complete this beautiful dress, in a warm friendly, encouraging environment. Supporting you every step of the way to give you the confidence and abilities to start you out on your dressmaking adventure, so you can discover the joy of knowing you made your own beautiful unique dress!

SKILL LEVEL: BEGINNER DRESSMAKER

This is the perfect class for the beginner dressmaker or someone who needs a refresher in the basics of dressmaking. You don’t need to have made any clothing before but you must be able to use a sewing machine confidently and know how to thread one, sew in a straight line and ideally have completed a few simple projects such as a pump bag or cushion.

THE DRESS

We will be making the Simple Sew Nancy Dress (worth £10.00) which you’ll receive for free! It’s a classic shift dress with a collar, that will suit a wide range of body shapes and sizes and can be made sleeveless or with two different sleeve options.

DRESS SIZE

The size range for this pattern is 8-20. If you are at the beginning or end of the pattern size range, please could you let us have your measurements before the class starts, so we can make sure we have the correct size for you.

WHAT YOU’LL LEARN

As well as lots of techniques and tips you’ll learn how to:

Read and understand the information on a pattern envelope.

Measure yourself correctly and choose the right size garment to make.

Lay out pattern pieces and understand and transfer pattern markings.

Make simple pattern and fit adjustments.

Make and attach a collar.

Create and stitch bust darts.

Sew in a zip.

Set in sleeves.

Face a neckline.

Finish raw edges of the dress and how to choose the best method for your garment and fabric.

Understand and use professional stitch techniques to finish your garment beautifully, such as stay-stitching, under- stitching, edge- stitching and hemming options.

MATERIALS AND FABRIC REQUIREMENTS.

For the first session you’ll need to bring (or purchase at Betty’s) the following materials and notions:

All sizes and styles require:

0.5m of lightweight fusible interfacing

22 inch zip

Matching all-purpose thread.

CHOOSING YOUR FABRIC

There are some beautiful fabrics available to purchase at Betty’s that would be perfect for the Nancy Dress. Medium weight Cotton is the perfect fabric to use, something like a Cotton Poplin or Quilting Cotton, which is also really nice to use for the beginner dressmaker. If you’d like to purchase your fabric elsewhere and in advance of the class and you’re not sure what might be suitable let us know and we’ll try and help.

FABRIC QUANTITIES

For 45 inch wide Fabric: 2.5m

For 60 inch wide fabric: 1.75m

If you’d like to make the dress with a contrast coloured collar you will need 0.25m of your contrast fabric.
