Free Machine Embroidery Workshop

Free machine embroidery is a relaxed, creative way of drawing and mark-making with your sewing machine. This workshop is open to beginners, but is particularly suited to those who have tried free machine embroidery before and would like to build confidence, explore ideas, and develop their own designs.

This is not a sewing machine basics course, so you should have a general understanding of how to use a sewing machine. That said, free machine embroidery is quick to pick up, and we’ll cover any issues as we go.

What we’ll do

The session begins with a recap of the core techniques: setting up the machine, moving fabric freely, and creating simple stitched marks. From there, we’ll move into design-led work, using natural forms such as seed heads and seed pods as inspiration.

You’ll also be introduced to appliqué, learning how to layer and stitch different fabrics (including selections from my Liberty stash) to add texture and interest. The focus is on experimenting and building a small collection of stitched pieces rather than completing a single project.

By the end of the workshop, you’ll go home with a stitched panel made up of several smaller designs, suitable for cards, framing, or as a starting point for further textile or patchwork work.

Suitable for beginners and returners. Ideal if you’ve done free machine embroidery before and want to continue developing your own ideas.

Use of machines, materials, and equipment, plus tea, coffee, and light refreshments. Everything you need is provided.

Workshop packs

Optional packs and materials will be available to purchase if you’d like to continue working on free machine embroidery at home.
