Sewing Machine Basics Workshop

This relaxed, practical workshop is designed for complete beginners or anyone returning to sewing after a long break who wants a clear, confidence-building refresher.

Sewing machines often do work even when they’re not set up properly — just not very well. That’s where frustration creeps in. This course focuses on helping you understand how your machine really works, so you can get the best out of it and enjoy sewing again.

Who it’s for

  • Absolute beginners
  • Returners wanting a refresher
No previous sewing experience is needed.

What you’ll learn

  • How to set up and thread a sewing machine correctly
  • What the tension does (and how to spot when it’s wrong)
  • What the different stitches are for
  • What the main machine feet do
  • How to troubleshoot common problems
  • Simple, practical tips that manuals often miss

You’ll also make a small project to take home, helping you put your new skills into practice.

What’s included

Use of our sewing machines, tools and materials, plus tea and coffee. You don’t need to bring anything except yourself.

What next?

This course is a great stepping stone into our garment-making workshops or our popular social sewing sessions.
